All of us at Farmers Market Finds are getting very excited for opening day of the Riverfront Farmers Market, this Saturday, April 16th. This is one of our favorite local markets and a Saturday morning hot spots for natives as well as tourists into the area. Located along the Cape Fear River in Historic Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, this curbside market features local farmers, producers, artists and crafters, and musicians. Anticipate seeing your usual ‘suspects’ – fresh fruits and berries, vegetables, plants, herbs, flowers, eggs, cheeses, meats, seafood, honey, baked goods, legumes, jams and jellies. But be sure to check out some of the specialty items unique to our area, like Angela’s Pickled Peppers, wine made from regional muscadine grapes from local favorite Bannerman Vineyards, and Farmstead Goat Cheese from Nature Way Farms. If you happen to be spending your summer holidays – Memorial Day, July 4th or Labor Day in the Port City, be sure to pick up a loaf of Red, White & Blueberry Bread from Great Harvest Bread Co. This delicious, dense bread is baked with cherries and blueberries. Toasted with a little butter it is about as good as bread gets. But it’s only available on holiday market weekends, so be sure to note that for your visit.
The Markets’ fantastic location along the Cape Fear River is centered in the Downtown Historic District. This area is rich in arts, music and entertainment. In keeping with that theme the Market does include artists and crafters. You’ll meet our good friend Robin Macek, creator of YOUMEUS Designs jewelry, and enjoy a great selection of photography, pottery, woodcrafts, and home decor items.
Downtown Wilmington offers a wide variety of shopping and dining opportunities, as well as a beautiful Riverwalk that extends from one end of downtown to the other. It’s a perfect place to spend a day, enjoy a picturesque setting, and a robust local history. And we would certainly be remiss not to mention that directly across the river you’ll notice the USS North Carolina, a WWII battleship whose permanent home across from the market stands as a memorial to WWII veterans and a wonderful museum all will enjoy.
The Riverfront Farmers Market was developed to provide a place for local growers, producers, artisans and crafters to sell their goods directly to consumers, to educate consumers about local farming and seasonal eating, to encourage and promote the use of locally grown farm products and to enhance quality of life in Greater Wilmington by providing a community activity that fosters social gathering and interaction. They have masterfully met that goal! So plan a visit to Wilmington. Pick up a cup of coffee and start your stroll through this delightful market. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
See you next time at the Market!
