5 Great Winter Markets

With summer behind us and the nip of fall air present each morning, it’s time to start looking forward to the wonderful holiday markets that make up my (and hopefully your) venues for gifts this year. Scouring art calendars and reviews from around the country, these are some of the top Winter Markets that Farmers Market Finds would love to attend this year.

From December 2-24 check out the amazing Columbus Circle Holiday Market in New York City. This market is a don’t-miss for those who live in the city or visit to feel the energy that is unique to New York at Christmas time. The Columbus Circle Holiday Market is located in one of the most stunning locations in New York City, historic Central Park. Situated at 59th Street and Central Park West, near the southwest entrance of the park, the market is the perfect place to shop for holiday gifts from artisans and designers and to soak in the splendor of winter in New York.Columbus Circle Holiday Market, New York CityOn the other coast, check out Seattle’s largest indie craft fair, the 11th Annual Urban Craft Uprising, December 5-6, 2015. At the Urban Craft Uprising (UCU), shoppers can choose from a wide variety of hand-crafted goods, including clothing of all types, jewelry, gifts, bags, wallets, buttons, accessories, aprons, children’s goods, toys, housewares, furniture, paper goods, candles, kits, art, food, and much, much more. Each show is carefully curated and juried to ensure the best mix of high quality and original crafts and arts.  The show features more than 150 vendors and, in its 11 years, UCU has garnered so much attention that more than 16,000 fans swarm to the show over the course of the weekend. Hundreds of fans are lined up before the doors even open to receive their famous swag bags full of goodies from the vendors and generous sponsors. Be sure to check out the hourly crafty book signings and demos. This show is free and fun for the whole family!

An annual show that I attend is the Craftsman’s Christmas Classic. While I thought this show was only in Columbia, South Carolina, I recently found out that the company that manages the Columbia show has similar shows in Richmond, VA and Greensboro, NC. This show is another can’t-miss for handcrafted gifts! While there are some commercial vendors at the market, the handcrafters are easily identified, accessible to talk with about their unique items, and often willing to make a deal when you purchase more than a few things. Check the Craftsman’s Christmas Classic website for the dates of each show closest to you.

In addition to being the “Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin, Texas is also home to The Blue Genie Art Bazaar.  This unique holiday art show will open for it’s 15th year from  November 27–December 24 at the Marchesa Hall & Theatre. All items at the bazaar have been handmade by local and regional artists who are selected through a rigorous jury process. The bazaar features the work of more than 200 artists offering a wide variety of imaginative and beautiful gifts. You can expect to find paintings, photography, prints, sculptures, jewelry, clothing, accessories, glassworks, and ceramics. We love that a portion of the Bazaar proceeds are donated to the Make-A-Wish® Foundation. Parking & admission are free of charge. The venue offers a full bar with snacks and cash and cards accepted. So make a full day of this event!Blue Genie Art Bazaar

The 11th Annual By Hand Fine Art & Craft Fair in Cleveland, Ohio, will run November 13 -15, 2015. The fair showcases more than 200 local and national artists and has been ranked as one of the top art festivals by the Art Fair Sourcebook. The event is an indoor juried art festival in northeast Ohio and features everything from fine oil paintings to functional pottery and textiles. Attendees can enjoy engaging demonstrations and savvy shoppers will be thrilled to find one-of-a-kind special gifts for family and friends. Admission is free. Check out the fair’s Facebook page for more information and while you’re in Cleveland, make sure to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
