With Mother’s Day right around the corner, Farmer’s Market Finds went on the hunt to find some creative mother/daughter teams. We threw the request out on our Facebook page and quickly heard back from the Mother Daughter Studio. Mother and daughter, best friends and business partners Harriet and Erica Gooding are the duo behind the Mother Daughter Studio. Born from a lifetime creating art, Harriet Gooding has filled the homes of family and friends with her artwork for years. When her oldest daughter Erica developed a talent for jewelry making a friend suggested they combine their talents and start a business. Loving the idea they formed the Mother Daughter Studio and began selling their handmade jewelry and pottery at the Iowa City Farmers Market. For as long as Erica can remember her mother has been painting, drawing, and creating art. Growing up Harriet challenged her and her sister Eulone (an actress and photographer) to tap into their own creativity. Giving them hours of devotion, teaching them how to use tools, brushes, and their imagination, Harriet opened the girls to the world of art and design. Erica began making beaded jewelry in high school and as her skill increased, she began working with metals, copper in particular. Creating unique designs with color and shading by using patinas and buffing, copper allows Erica to make her jewelry come alive. Harriet has been painting her entire life. Years ago, Harriet decided to try her hands on a potter’s wheel and a new love was born! Each piece of Harriet’s pottery is hand thrown and hand painted without the use of molds. Her experience and artistic ability creates unique, one of a kind pieces for every style and taste. All Mother Daughter Studio pottery is food and dishwasher safe. And although each piece is custom made, designs can be replicated. So if you see a piece you love, don’t hesitate to ask Harriet to make one just for you! As Mother’s Day descends upon us and you scramble to find a gift for mom, consider the symbolism in giving a unique piece of jewelry or pottery from the Mother Daughter Studio. Harriet and Erica’s love for each other and ability to work together is a rare gift! Playing on each other’s strengths, Harriet often draws the designs that become Erica’s jewelry and Erica helps pack and unpack her mom’s pottery for market. Daily communication, creating their pieces and working side by side in their booth at the Iowa City Farmers Market is the gift that keeps on giving!
