We at Farmers Market Finds love things hand grown, hand-made or hand crafted. We also love to travel so we are sharing some travel “finds”, aka terrific fairs, and festivals taking place around the country this spring and summer. While not farmer’s markets, these art festivals provide another opportunity to support local artisans and craftspeople who work tirelessly to bring their visions to life. Here is a sample of shows we recommend visiting this season.
Laumeir Art Fair – Laumeir Sculpture Park, St. Louis, Missouri– May 8-10
To kick off the summer art fairs, check out the Laumeir Art Fair, a 3 day event over Mother’s day weekend featuring 150 juried artists set out in the Laumeirs Sculpture Park (which is worth the trip on its own!). The art fair hosts numerous special events including a Wine Tasting Kick Off on Friday night, a Beer Tasting on Saturday Night and a Mother’s Day Brunch. Can’t think of a better way to spend Mother’s Day!
Art on the Square, Belleville, IL – May 15-17, 2015
Just across the mighty Mississippi from St. Louis lies the town of Belleville, Illinois, home of Art on the Square – one of the nation’s top ranked art shows. In its 14th year, Art on the Square is a 3 day festival of art, music, stage performances, food and drink. The juried art show features 100 artists from all over the world. Events include a Living with Art Interior Design Stage featuring stars from HGTV, a High School Art exhibition, and an interactive Children’s Garden of Art. The art work features paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, wood and other fine art and crafts. All of the events are free and open to the public. One note, no pets are allowed at the show so keep that in mind if you are traveling with your four legged friends!
A must visit this summer is the nations oldest outdoor art show. In June 1932, a small group of Philadelphia art students first came to Rittenhouse Square to hang their work between the trees on clotheslines. Today the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show hosts approximately 150 artists and art students from Philadelphia and all over the United States and abroad for one weekend in early June, and another weekend in mid September. The show features an Art Walk and Talk, a guided tour of the artists showing their work. Located in the heart of Philadelphia, the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show is in close proximity to many other landmarks including the Liberty Museum (home of the Libery Bell), Love Park, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Four events – One Fair! The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair is actually 4 award winning art shows rolled into one amazing weekend!
